'Beefeater’ is the nickname for a Yeoman of the Guard, a warder at the ancient Tower of London, the royal citadel built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. The name was coined by the Grand Duke of Tuscany. He was impressed by the stocky frames and stern countenance of the guards he encountered at the Tower. In addition to their extraordinary red and gold uniforms, the Tower’s Yeomen Warders were awarded the privilege of an extra-large ration of beef, which contributed to their legendary size and strength. This was at a time when beef was beyond the means of the masses.
