Copenhagen's Little Mermaid Landmark Bead in Sterling Silver by Carina
This Landmark Bead depicts the small and unimposing Little Mermaid statue that sits on a rock in the Copenhagen harbor in Churchill Park, Denmark. This little statue is a Copenhagen icon and a popular tourist attraction.
The statue was commissioned in 1909 by Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg, after he had been fascinated by a ballet about the fairy tale. The sculptor Edward Eriksen created the statue, which was unveiled in 1913. He used his wife. Eline Eriksen, as the model.
The fairy tale by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen is about a young mermaid who is willing to give up everything to gain a human soul and the love of a prince.
