The Blue Mosque's full name is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Turkish: Sultan Ahmet Camii). The Istanbul historic mosque is popularly known as the "Blue Mosque" because it features blue tiles on the walls of its interior. The Blue Mosque has one main dome, six minarets, and eight smaller domes. The design combines Byzantine elements of the neighboring Hagia Sophia with traditional Islamic architecture and is considered to be the last great mosque of the classical period. The Blue Mosque was built from 1609 to 1616, during the rule of Ahmed I. It contains a tomb of the founder, a madrasah and a hospice. While still used as a mosque, the Blue Mosque is a very popular tourist attraction.
This highly detailed bead was designed by San Francisco Bay Area artist Shani Yokoyama, then hand carved by a master bead wax carver, and then cast in high quality sterling silver with oxidized accents.
