What is "majolica"? Majolica is the world generally used for the enameled pottery that has been made in Italy since the Renaissance. The term refers to carefully chosen clay wares coated with a solution of white glaze. It also means the process of painting on the glaze before it is fired into a hard shiny surface. The name Majolica comes from the island of Majorca, an active port for trading vessels sailing between Spanish and Italian ports.

Majolica pottery reached a summit of artistic quality between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The molded or thrown clay piece is given a first or "bisque" firing then covered with an opaque lead and tint oxide glaze. (Leadless glazes are the standard for modern contemporary potters.). Decorations are then hand painted on the dry glaze and a second firing fuses both glaze and decoration to an even glossy surface. The direct painting technique led to vigorous designs and novel imagery, producing some delightful and artistically satisfying creations in European ceramic history.
